Two prototypes of expert system in water distribution systems are developed and successfully incorporated with pipe-network mapping system that is implemented geographic information system (GIS) as well as pipenetwork simulation system that solves hydraulic and water quality conditions. One of the proposed models is established by the heuristic knowledge-based rules from the survey of on-site operators, advice of expert,and literature reviews. Backward chaining inference is employed for searching potential causes of typical customer perceptions for water utilities. The application of the expert system may alleviate difficulties of operators who are not familiar with water supply system including hydraulics, environmental engineering, and microbiology. The other expert system is devised to provide a guide for assessing an integrated performance of water distribution systems with respect to hydraulic measures, water quality measures,structural measures, and customer complaints. The expert system for supporting the integrated performance evaluation can be expected to allocate the priority for rehabilitating and replacing of deteriorated water mains. |
