During the last decade, variety of water associated problems such as morefrequent and severe droughts and floods, conflicts between stakeholders forwater use, degradation of ecosystems due to water pollution have made theserious burden undertaken by governments and local residents in Korea. In orderto resolve these problems, advanced tools for basin-wide Integrated WaterResources Management (IWRM) allowing more efficient and sustainableoperation of existing water resources facilities are urgently required (Ko & Chung,2002, Ko, 2004, Ko & Kim, 2008). The new basin-wide IWRM approach seeksenvironmental sustainability, equity, and economic efficiency in water allocationand operation through integrated considerations of the mutual interests of waterstakeholders, the relationship of water quantity and quality, and the relationshipof water and adjacent land use. In this paper, the technical framework for a longtermnational research project to develop the Integrated Real-time WaterManagement System (IRWMS), a decision support tool, for integrated river basinwater management will be introduced. |
