Layered settlement developed during the construction reflects the core compression, which is relatively high, while the crest exhibits much lower settlement. Layered settlement continues to deform long after their construction has been completed, although at an ever-decreasing rate. Initially large or unexpected layered settlement may be the only indication of potential problems with the dam. Thus it is necessary to develop a prediction method that permits evaluation of future settlement and comparison of these values with those observed. Most of the existing models to predict crest settlements are empirical equations based the data observed. Such a approaches produce a single displacement for a given height and time irrespective of many other factors such as the physical and mechanical characteristics of fill material that influence the settlements considerably. In this paper, the settlement prediction model, which can predict crest settlements by layered settlement during construction, was developed. The crest settlements of 5 rock-fill dams have been predicted by the proposed model and these values have been compared with those measured by field instruments for its verification. |
