As primary sources of freshwater for modern civilization, maintaining acceptable water quality of reservoirs is of great importance. Water quality of a reservoir varies along horizontal distance as well as along water depth. Therefore, sampling water quality at multiple locations is necessary to quantify representative water quality over an entire reservoir. Although maintaining greater number of sampling locations would beadvantageous to obtain a more comprehensive status of water quality of the entire reservoir, this entails considerable cost while the budget for water sampling is always finite. Therefore, it is practically important to reduce the number of sampling sites and to place them at optimal locations. This study proposed a method for optimal design of water quality monitoring network over a reservoir using the information theory. Application of the method to the lake Yongdam showed that the method can find an optimal combination of sampling sites that have little redundancy and representative of all sites. In this light, the proposed method can help effective water quality sampling with lower cost. |
