decision makers’ preferences in terms of selecting options. Both of these sources of information can have various degrees of imprecision. This study combines geographic information systems (GIS) with a Fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) technique to attempt to consider these sources of imprecision. The outcome of a floodplain management study is typically a recommendation for a single alternative flood management strategy. If this is developed by simply averaging over the entire floodplain, information is lost about the preference of the various alternatives at specific points in the floodplain. Similarly, if a limited number of criteria are used with an MCDA then alternatives will be ranked according to those few criteria. If a larger number of appropriate criteria are used more information will be available as to the impact of a specific criterion on the overall ranking. This study shows examples of how the details of the analysis might be synthesized and shows the possible impact of inserting additional criteria into the MCDA so that the final decision maker can make a more informed decision from imprecise information. |
