The recent occurrence of highly turbid water followed by extraordinary intensities of rainfall due to climate change is increasing. Turbid water can stay in the reservoir for a extended period of time and the turbidity can spread through reservoir after turnover. Turbid water can cause complicated negative effects on aquatic ecosystems. Nutrients introduced to water body with turbid water can cause algal blooms while turbidity caused by suspended particle can limit light for growth of algae in the water.CE-QUAL-W2 model was constructed and calibrated to simulate downstream effects of turbid water discharge of Imha Reservoir and Andong Reservoir. Especially, light limitation effect on algal growth was examined intensively. Along the Nakdong River in 2006, Chl-a concentration decrease was observed after July during the discharge of turbid water while opposite trends was observed after August. It was analyzed that the effects of light availability was critical for the algal growth in the upstream areas of the river while increase in nutrient concentrations are more important in the downstream areas for algal growth. |
