To measure groundwater level rise affected by surface water level rise at the upstream of the large weirs, which are constructed by Four Major Rivers Restoration Project (4MRRP) in Korea, 900 groundwater monitoring wells are proposed at the plains near a river considering groundwater flow direction, topographic characteristics (low plain land), the rule of equal interval of monitoring wells, and economical efficiency. A numerical model using MODFLOW is also used to estimate groundwater flow and influence area. Total 129 monitoring wells have been constructed along the Nakdong River and Yeongsan River. The analysis of the recent 1-year monitoring data indicates that groundwater levels are so interactive with surface water level, especially more at the plain close to river. Groundwater monitoring wells will be valuable to assess and forecast the possible groundwater flooding and consider a countermeasure like a drainage system. |
