As part of the risk analysis, geotechnical failure modes in the different dam and reservoirs inKorea were compared. To evaluate quantitatively the risk, the event tree analysis based on the internal erosiontoolbox of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was adopted. In the potential failure mode analysis, theengineering assessment consisting of the literature review and site investigation were conducted. With the helpof the expert group discussion, credible and significant failure modes were carefully selected. Three casesincluding S dam as a large dam, Y and G reservoirs as a small reservoir were chosen for the potentialfailure mode analyses. Five failure modes were selected for S dam and Y reservoir, whereas nine failuremodes were selected for G reservoir. Comparative study on these three cases shows that potential failuremode analysis reveals the degree of the potential risk in the dam structures.Keywords : Event tree analysis, Initial mechanism, Risk analysis, Potential Failure mode
