A verticallyalignedcarbonnanotube(VACNT)membranecreatedfromthesuccessfulfusionofnanotechnologyandmembranetechnologyhasbeenstatedtobeanextgenerationmembranedueto itsfastwatertransportandantimicrobialproperties.AlthoughpreviousstudiesoftheVACNTmembrane reportedthepotentialforfastwatertransportordesalinationbymoleculardynamicssimulation, thisstudyisthe first toreportonthefeasibilityofusingtheVACNTmembraneforwaterpurification. TheVACNTmembrane(4.8nmofporediameterand6.81010 #/cm2 of poredensity)wasfabricated andits flux, rejectionperformance,andmembranebiofoulingtendencywereevaluatedincomparison tothecommercialultrafiltration (UF)membrane.TheVACNTmembraneappearedtohaveawater flux approximatelythreetimeshigherthantheUFmembraneandwatertransportapproximately70,000timesfasterthanconventionalno-slip flow.Thishigher flux waspeculiarlyobservedinwater,themost hydrophilicsolvent,whileothersolventsshowedthatpermeate flux decreasedwithhigherviscosity.TherejectionpropertyoftheVACNTmembraneasexaminedbytheMWCOmeasurementwassimilar tothecommercialUFmembrane.Additionally,theVACNTmembraneshowedbetterbiofoulingresistance withapproximately15%lesspermeate flux reductionand2loglessbacterialattachmentthanthe UFmembrane.ThisstudyreportsthehighpotentialoftheVACNTmembranewithantifoulingproperty inthewaterpurification process. |
