A surveillance on effluent water and a water quality standard of effluent water are beingtightened. As the turbidity level is high at a water treatment plant, the efficiency of a effluent watertreatment plant decreases. Therefore, it is difficult to manage water quality. In this study, themembrane filtration process for effluent water treatment was evaluated. When the UV254 of supernatantin the thickener was high, the trans-membrane pressure increased. When the coagulant was injected,the trans-membrane pressure decreased. The trans-membrane pressure decreased more when thesupernatant in the thickener was treated mixing with backwash waste than when the supernatant in thethickener was treated singly. The trans-membrane pressure reached the limit in the short time at fluxof 1.5 m/day. However, it was possible to operate the process for a long period at flux of 0.5 m/day.When the particles in the effluent water are smaller than the membrane pore, irreversible membranefouling occurred. It lead to increase the trans-membrane pressure rapidly.
