If membrane reaches limited transmembrane pressure (TMP) or water quality declines in a membrane process, chemical cleaning is conducted. Inorganic foulants are cleaned using sulfuric acid, organic foulants are cleaned using sodium hydroxide and microbes are cleaned using sodium hypochlorite. In this study, the recovery rate of membrane was evaluated according to various cleaning solutions by the membrane cleaning index.The MCI test unit consists of a hollow fiber type membrane cell including cross-flow. The clean in place (CIP) solution was selected by sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite.The figure 1 showed membrane cleaning index of organic, inorganic and microbes for CIP. The membrane cleaning of inorganic was the most efficient using sodium hydroxide and the membrane cleaning of microbes was the least efficient using sodium hypochlorite.It is expected that a pre-test of cleaning efficiency is possible using Membrane Cleaning Index before CIP. |
