Finding the optimal cost designs for water distribution networks out of various alternatives while satisfying the design criteria is necessary, and metaheuristic algorithms have been applied to the optimal cost design of water distribution networks. To enhance the optimization capability, network decomposition approaches as engineering techniques can be used with current optimization techniques. In this study, the source tracing tool in EPANET was used for water distribution network decomposition. The proposed method includes four steps: 1) network decomposition, 2) subnetwork optimization, 3) network integration, and 4) total network optimization. The proposed source tracing-based decomposition method with metaheuristic algorithm is applied to real water distribution network and the results compared with those by other algorithms. The real world size network is decomposed effectively by using the suggested source tracing-based approach. The proposed method found better solutions than previous optimization algorithms for applied water distribution network. The results show that the engineering approach proposed in this study is useful for large scale optimization problems of water distribution networks. |
