The 2016 Gyeongju earthquake occurred on September 12, 2016 in Gyeongju, South Korea. It was aM 5.8 earthquake, the strongest one ever recorded in the country since instrumental measurementsbegan in 1978. When the dams in Korea were shaken by the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake, seismicmotions of the dams were captured by accelerometers installed at many major dams in Korea by KoreaWater Resources Corporation (K-water). Fortunately, no severe damages were reported except onlylongitudinal cracks found at crests of two earth dams for irrigation several kilometers away from theepicenter.In this paper, the characteristics of 2016 Gyeongju earthquake itself and seismic motions, in particularaccelerations, will be analyzed to introduce better understanding on seismic responses of damssubjected to earthquake motions. Furthermore attenuation characteristics of measured accelerationswill be evaluated and compared to the previously suggested ones in Korea and other countries.
