To date, microplastics are ubiquitous particles and have increasingly attracted worldwide attention as the emerging persistent pollutants due to human health risks. However, there is still limited information on microplastics in drinking water and its source. To evaluate the occurrence of microplastics in the influents of drinking water treatment plants(DWTPs) of Korea, a nationwide monitoring was conducted in 38 representative DWTPs with large treatment capacities. The drinking water sources were mainly composed of various surface waters such as lake, dam, and river. The influents were pretreated using wet peroxidation prior to the identification and characterization(polymer type, shape, and size) of microplastics(> 20㎛) with microscope-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(μFT-IR). The various polymer types of microplastics were detected in influents of DWTP in order of polyolefins, acrylics, polyesters, vinyls, fluoropolymers, polyurethanes, and styrenics. This comprehensive monitoring study provides information on the abundance and level and characteristics of microplastics in drinking water sources for treatment processes and removal strategies in DWTPs. |
