This study investigated the potential of the Gaussian Splatting technique, a novel technology developed in 2023 for 3D digital object visualization based on computer vision, to be applied to the 3D digital visualization of civil structures such as dams. The target structure for this study was the Gampo Dam, which has a height of 35 m and is currently undergoing a digital twin dam safety management project, making digital rendering crucial. 52 drone image data were used to perform Gaussian Splatting 3D rendering, which yielded superior quality results that were closer to real-world conditions compared to existing 3D mesh models based on photogrammetry and NeRF/Instant NGP rendering performance. It is expected that this study will contribute to the innovation of 3D visualization for the digital transformation of civil structures through future follow-up research.
