The establishment of efficient and cost-effective water electrolysis technologies is a key requirement for realizing a sustainable hydrogen economy. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis has drawn considerable attention because of its ability to produce high-purity hydrogen at high current density with compact system design. Within such systems, the polymer electrolyte membrane plays a central role in determining electrochemical performance and long-term stability. Conventional perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA)-based membranes, such as Nafion, remain the commercial standard, yet they suffer from high production cost, relatively low glass transition temperature, and emerging environmental restrictions due to PFAS regulation. These limitations highlight the urgent demand for fluorine-free, durable, and eco-friendly membrane materials. |
